Practicing Existential Therapy in Nashville, TN

One of my favorite theories for therapy is existential theory, and I want to geek out about it for a moment. Ultimately, existential therapy aims to help us live more deliberately, courageously, and meaningfully in the face of life’s chaos and uncertainties. Existential therapy helps us grow by inviting us to face challenges directly, which is really difficult because often times we’d rather avoid discomfort or search for relief and quick fixes. Through open exploration, we can learn to recognize our freedom to choose attitudes and actions, even when circumstances feel limiting. Growth occurs as we accept uncertainty as part of living and develop courage to act anyway.

Existential therapy also strengthens relationships by highlighting how choices affect others and by promoting open, honest, and vulnerable communication. Rather than promising happiness, it supports a fuller, more engaged and complex life that includes joy, sorrow, and ambiguity.

Existential therapy can be particularly good at achieving an increase in resilience, self-compassion, and self-defined purpose. By integrating insight with action, existential therapy equips people to meet transitions, losses, and ethical dilemmas with greater clarity and responsibility. Over time, this approach reframes challenges as opportunities for learning, helping clients build meaning through committed choices, sustained effort, and acceptance of limits while continuing to grow in work, relationships, creativity, spirituality, and community participation across changing seasons of life with compassion, honesty, and perseverance daily. I am a huge fan of existential therapy and have personally benefited so much from this wonderful theory.
